The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry has officially requested that the U.S. Department of Labor delay implementation of the new rule that would increase the minimum salary required for a worker to be exempt from overtime. The new rule is currently set to go into effect December 1, 2016.
LABI specifically requested that the Department of Labor delay implementation of the new rule for six months, until June 1, 2017, in the twenty two parishes that President Obama officially declared to be disaster areas due to our recent flooding. LABI explained that the new rule would significantly hamper recovery efforts by forcing employers to either limit the number of hours that employees can work or spend more of their limited recovery dollars on labor costs.
